SURFSCHOOL RISK MANAGEMENT
ISLAND SURFSCHOOL RISK MANAGEMENT OVERVIEW
Island Surfboards has been a part of the Phillip Island landscape since 1969. Island Surf School operates from Island Surfboards Smiths Beach store. Our aim is to provide the highest quality surf lessons in the safest possible environment. Smiths Beach at Phillip Island is recognised as an ideal choice for novice surfers.
Island Surf School is an affiliated Surfing Australia surf school. Our operation is regularly monitored by Surfing Victoria under Surfing Australia and International Surfing Association guidelines and our beach permits are renewed annually by the Phillip Island Nature Park.
All surf school staff are qualified Surfing Australia surf coach Instructors with current Bronze Surf Life Saving Victoria certificates. Island Surf School head coaches maintain Surfing Australia level two certificates. All coaches adhere to Island Surf Schools Coaches code of conduct.
Island Surf School is sun smart aware and an explanation of the dangers of UV and supplying sunscreen is a mandatory function of our operation.
Island Surf School’s basic lesson plan includes an open ocean awareness component that explains hazards and rips at Smiths Beach and other surf beaches. A communication drill identifies staff and their method of directives including an emergency drill. All lessons include a warm up exercise drill before any surfing activity takes place.
Island Surf School lessons use Surfing Australia ratio guide lines of 1:8. The head coach will oversee any injury or emergency action. Consultation between attending school teachers and Island Surf School head office will result in the appropriate action.
The head coach defines the surfing area with two yellow flags; our first aid equipment is located on the beach within this area. The head coach will be responsible for all subsequent incident documentation.
